Return to German Emigrants
to South Australia
ship Alfred,
562 / 604 tons, Captain H.E. Decker, from Hamburg
27th October 1849, via Plymouth 3rd November 1849, arrived
at Port Adelaide, South Australia 31st January 1850 -
on to Port
Phillip 15th February, arriving 24th February 1850
South Australian Register Friday, 1st February
1850
"The Alfred from Hamburg and Plymouth"
This German Passenger ship arrived yesterday,
from Hamburg (27 October) and Plymouth (3rd November) with its passengers,
in 88 days, being the shortest passage yet performed by a German ship
to this port. Only one death, an infant, occurred on the voyage. This
fine ship had brought to our shores, incognito, the first real live
Prince, in the person of His Highness Prince Frederick of Holstein,
(cousin of
Her Majesty, Queen Victoria). We understand His Highness is not likely
to "sit down" in our Upper House of Hereditary legislators, as he intends
to make it to four of these Colonies. His Highness Prince Frederick of
Holstein attended by Captain Stanley Carr, had an audience, on the morning
of
February 1st with his Excellence Henry Young.
then this the next day. ... Passengers per ship
Alfred, arrival reported yestyerday, Captain Stanley
Carr ; Lieutenant de Gronwald
(the traveling
name of the Prince Frederick of Holstein) & Messrs. D.A. Zachariah,
H. Balk (Carl George Heinrich 16), J. F. Schramm (Johann Friedrich 17
1445/1) ; G. Hindermann and sister in the cabin and 111 steerage
passengers.
Sydney Shipping Gazette 9th March 1850
Arrived at Port Phillip.— February 24th, Alfred,
ship, Decker, from Adelaide 15th February in ballast. Passengers.— Captain
Stanley Carr ; Lieutenant Frederick Grönwald (Prince Frederic of
Schleswig-Holstein), Mr. & Mrs. Cannington, and thirty-nine German immigrants.
see http://www.geocities.com/mppraetorius/main-com1.htm
The ship Alfred, ex-Australia,
was built at Lulea, Sweden, in 1841. ....On 30 November 1844, the AUSTRALIA
was purchased from Liliewalch of Stockholm by the Hamburg firm of Joh.
Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn, who renamed her ALFRED, despite the fact that
the firm already owned another vessel of this name......
note.— There are very
few surviving original lists of German passengers, so
the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources,
such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources,
input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry
Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with
additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me
