Return to German Emigrants to South Australia

barque Victoria, 306 tons, Captain C.P. Tonnisen, from Hamburg 13th May 1858, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 24th September 1858

The South Australian Advertiser, Saturday 25 September 1858
The Hamburg barque, Victoria, from Hamburg, hove in sight yesterday morning, after having been out at sea the space of four months and ten days, encountering very heavy weather during the whole period, and owing to her being remarkably light, could not stand up to her canvass during the heavy gales she encountered, not having barely enough ballast in her to keep her upright.
She is the same vessel that arrived in this Port two years back, landing a large number of emigrants from Hamburg, is now under command of the same Captain, (C. P. Tonnisen) and brings one hundred and eighty-six adults married and single and hundred and twenty-one children of both sexes over eight years of age, and five infants, being a total of three hundred and twenty-two souls ; all Prussians and pricipally mechanics. During the voyage three infants died through teething, and scurvy made great havoc laying many of the seamen prostrate, eleven of whom are now suffering from the effects of that cutaneous disorder.

An index from the State Library South Australia (SLSA) shows that 187 German migrants should have been on the Victoria, I have been able to find 189 as listed below — Regards Robert.

note.— There are very few surviving original lists of German passengers, so the data below has been compiled from a variety of sources, such as contemporary newspaper(s), internet sources, input from descendants and the South Australian Heraldry Genealogy society, (SAGHS).
I know the list is incomplete and may contain errors, so any feedback with additions or corrections, will be most appreciated. Please contact me using the link above. Regards Robert, Adelaide
