Passenger List of the Hanoverian, Allan Line, April 1st, 1885

HANOVERIAN, Allan Line, Captain B. Thomson, from Glasgow, Scotland 1^st April 1885 to Halifax, Nova Scotia 13^th April 1885, 119 passengers.

This passenger list contains the names of 100 young boys. Notes for this sailing from the National Archives of Canada indicate they were "Quarriers" but there is nothing on the passenger list to indicate that, other than the fact that they were Scottish. The immigration report from the Halifax agent, however, does specify that the children were from Quarrier Homes and that they were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Kelly (the cabin passengers).

The boys appear to comprise of two groups, each group listed loosely from eldest to youngest rather than alphabetically. All passengers are Scottish with the exception of the first seven passengers in steerage, who are indicated as "foreign." The majority of passengers are male, and single, the exceptions are noted with (m). Destination for passengers is not entered for most, nor has the compiler utilized ditto marks for "destination" as he did for "occupation or calling" and "port contracted to land" (Halifax). One may be able to assume that the first seven men in steerage might all be destined to Montreal, Quebec. The children and the Kellys were going to Belleville, Ontario and Marchmont Home.
