Remarks:
- Divine Service was regularly performed when the weather permitted.
- I did not classify the different persuasions so as to obtain a correct
account of their respective numbers, but can safely state that the majority
consisted of Members of the churches of England and Scotland.
- I had every inclination to form a school on board, but not being supported
in my views, gave up the idea.
- The means adopted to preserve the health of those under my charge,
were ventilation and cleanliness. The male and Female berths being daily
cleaned out, beds and clothes taken on deck every day if the weather
was favourable: also the free use of Chloride of lime.
- The Emigrants were at all times recommended to assist in duties of
the ship, such as pumping water into the hold, to render the offensive
smell arising therefrom less annoying. They were also encouraged to
follow all their several trades, by which idleness was in some measure
prevented. Dancing and singing was recommended as a means of keeping
them contented and cheerful.
Signed: James Douglas, Surgeon.
