Log | Muster Roll | Settlers transferred from Stentor

HMS Weymouth, Richard Turner, master. Portsmouth January 7th 1820
to Table Bay April 25th 1820 and Algoa Bay May 15th 1820

Kindly transcribed and submitted to TheShipsList by Sue Mackay, of Cardiff. (additional transcriber notes in italics)

The Weymouth was used to transport 11 parties of 1820 settlers from Portsmouth to Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth). Such passenger lists as remain are in the Cape Archives but listings taken from their holdings, as well as a lot of background information on the emigration scheme and further details about many of the settlers, can be found in ‘The Settler Handbook’ by M.D.Nash, Chameleon Press 1987( ISBN 0 620 10940 8), available from the Albany Museum, Somerset Street, Grahamstown 6139, South Africa. The Public Record Office in Kew, London, holds both the captain’s log (ADM51/3543) and the second master’s log (ADM52/4655) as well as the ship’s muster roll. At first sight the two logs seem identical but there are subtle differences in the information they contain. Below are transcriptions of the captain’s log (ADM51/3543 and the muster roll for December 1819 (ADM37/6145)

This scale model was built by Dr J.A. Pringle of the Port Elizabeth Museum and based on the only known plans of a settler ship that have survived.

ADM51/3543 LOG OF HMS WEYMOUTH (1819-20)
Mr.Richard Turner, Master

Public Record Office, Kew, London

This log was transcribed on 31 January 2003. Time did not permit me to transcribe it all, so it is complete (other than margin notes on compass bearings etc) from December 16 1819 until Sunday February 6, after which I quickly noted down major events and any personal references to the 1820 settlers on board.
Some abbreviations have been expanded for the sake of clarity.
Other abbreviations occurring frequently in the log are:
Do = ditto
Qt = quantity

ADM37/6145 MUSTER ROLL OF HMS WEYMOUTH DECEMBER 1819
Public Record Office, Kew, London

The following is a transcript of the muster roll for HMS Weymouth for December 1819 taken from ADM37/6145 at the Public Record Office, Kew, London. Names appear in the same order as on the list, ie not alphabetically but presumably as they lined up to have their names taken.

Additonal infomation was found in the muster roll for HMS Weymouth for 1820, found in ADM37/6146, and has been added to the transcript below. There were musters taken at the half way point of the voyage, presumably after leaving the Canaries, and on arrival in South Africa. These musters are included in the ADM37/6146 muster roll book for 1820. As the list of names of the settlers is in exactly the same order for all the muster listings, I include below only additional information to the 1819 listing.

All names on the final muster for the voyage had a D + a date, though usually a " (ditto) from an entry above. D normally means Discharged but in the case of most settlers can be taken to mean Disembarked (DD = discharged dead). Many of the settlers appear to have disembarked on May 23 (Hyman's, James' and Cock's parties) or May 25 (Biggar's party). Presumably with sickness on board they had to wait out quarantine.
CGH below is my abbreviation for Cape of Good Hope.

Abbreviations, followed by a date, occurring in the muster roll are:
D = discharged / disembarked
DD = discharged dead

'Most first names were abbreviated using a superscript, but I have used an inverted comma to precede any superscript letter(s).'

These passengers all boarded the Weymouth on May 1st and disembarked at Algoa Bay on May 22nd.

'Most first names were abbreviated using a superscript, but I have used an inverted comma to precede any superscript letter(s).'
